I feel like the only one in this forum who couldn't give a crap about a general direct.
I've always felt that Treehouse segments and in depth focuses on games, like the last Animal Crossing Direct are infinitely more rewarding. Otherwise, I think a single annual direct, showcasing key software for the next 1-2 years is really all that's needed; and it feels much more special when it's infrequent. Having them 6-12 times a year like they did before was major overkill. People keep saying they want them all the time, but when they were happening all the time, it was constant "that sucked" "that was disappointing" responses. Nintendo at its best is giving an in depth look at their key software and just keep the constant stream of info on new games with their youtube and Nintendo News Switch channel. Their marketing and messaging will be a lot better as a result of keeping the "look at this list of games coming up in the future" to a minimum.
I think 3-4 Nindies per year will work well. Generally those smaller games work on a single hook, and don't need the in depth looks.
As I've said in other threads, Nintendo has been phasing out the general directs in favour of Nindies, focused directs, their youtube channel, and their Switch news channel. It won't get phased out completely, as they'll still have the summer show, and probably a Spaceworld slot show.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
