I feel like it is something I rarely see used seriously as an insult. It is usually handled as a joke when someone ironically wants to defend liking something weird, or jokingly wants to criticize something they find blase.

That said, it certainly can be used as an insult, generally along the same lines as "basic", saying that someone is uninteresting and part of the flock.

Also, I have never seen the word used in a political context. The fact that some people have somehow managed to turn this into a debate about the wage gap is astounding.
