And assuming you meant in the last couple generations, cause last couple years there's just been the Switch Lite, the thing is, whatever choice they would have made for a dedicated or hybrid handheld in the last couple generations, it would never have been as powerful as their dedicated home systems counterparts and this is easily demonstrated as in the last couple generations (Wii and Wii U) there was indeed a handheld available, the 3DS or the DS? Can't remember, but the point is, I don't need to go check specs to know that the Wii and Wii U were more powerful than the handheld systems Nintendo had on sale back in those days.

A dedicated home system will always have a significant raw power advantage over a handheld at the cost of portability whereas a handheld device will always have a portability advantage at the cost of raw power.
