Crash was fairly popular in Japan as well, despite being a Western IP. And you forget that Banjo is now owned by Microsoft, one of Nintendo's main competitors along with Sony, yet he got in. And for all this talk about Sony and how Crash's history is primarily PlayStation, there's one crucial thing to remember: The decision is not Sony's to make. Crash is owned by Activision, so they're the ones who make the call, not Sony or Naughty Dog. If Nintendo can strike a deal with Microsoft, why can't they do the same with Activision?

Cloud represents the FF series, but he mostly represents the Sony side of the series, when the franchise took off to become the premier console JRPG franchise in the world. And the game he comes from, Final Fantasy VII, was the end result of Nintendo and Square's relationship falling apart and why the game jumped from the N64 to the PS1. If it was Cecil or Terra, you'd have a point. But Cloud? The guy who is the manifestation and embodiment of that collapse between Nintendo and Square & Final Fantasy moving to PlayStation? There was just as big of a case for Cloud to be OUT of Smash as there was for him to be IN Smash.

Guilty trip or not, Joker is still in.

Well, that's easy, people aren't feeling as strongly for Crash since it doesn't have an identity with Nintendo like Banjo does which meant Banjo was always one of the major picks to get into the game since LOOOOOONG ago. Crash was just a meme character on the same level as Shrek and Goku honestly. There's no real sense of identity.

Though, honestly, looking at Spencer comments, making a deal to get Banjo's rights in Smash was probably easy as hell. The guy would be willing to throw any character Microsoft owns to get relevancy. I wouldn't be surprised if he even actually paid Nintendo to get him into the game.

As for Cloud, it doesn't matter that he is a representation of the post-Nintendo era from back then. FF history on Nintendo early system is undeniable which make the choice understandable even back in the WiiU era.

BULLSHIT! No real sense of identity?! Meme character?! The Crash N Sane Trilogy, with all versions put together, sold more than 10 million copies by the end of February. The 3 major mascot platformers of the 90s were Mario, Sonic, and Crash. The history is there. The identity with and against Nintendo is there. The popularity is there. And you're seriously comparing Crash to Shrek and Goku? Really? (And, what does that have anything to do with Nintendo's ability to strike a deal with Activision?)

Snake didn't have much of an identity with Nintendo back when he was revealed as the first 3rd party fighter for Brawl. He had even LESS of an identity with Nintendo than Crash does now. And if you want to talk about not having an identity with Nintendo. No character was made to be more anti-Nintendo/counter-Nintendo than Sonic. He was the mascot to Nintendo's biggest competitor in the early 90s and Mario's rival. The main reason he was even created was to be the anti-Mario and to stick it to Nintendo. Yet he got in and he's been in every Smash game since. The history was there. The identity, both with and against Nintendo, was there. And the popularity most DEFINITELY was there.

And this was back when Smash Bros. used to be strictly Nintendo characters. Snake and Sonic, two of the biggest anti-Nintendo characters at the time, completely destroyed that rule; Shattered it into a million pieces and left it dead and buried. And now, we've gotten Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, Cloud, Bayonetta, Simon Belmont, Joker, DQ Hero, and Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury (What kind of noteworthy relation and identity does Fatal Fury or Terry have with Nintendo to warrant them coming to Smash Bros? Fatal Fury & Terry have more relation and identity with Neo-Geo, Sega, and Sony than they do Nintendo.)

This is 2019, not 2005. After Snake, Sonic, Cloud, Joker, and Terry Bogard, that "relation/identity with Nintendo" rule isn't worth jack shit. But even if it is, Crash most definitely has a relation and identity with Nintendo that's very similar and identical to Sonic. That alone is enough for him to be in the game. Smash Bros. is now a celebration of video games and gaming history. Crash is most definitely a significant part of gaming history. He's coming. It's just a matter of when.

And if doesn't matter if Cloud was the representation of the post-Nintendo era of Final Fantasy given Final Fantasy's prior history with Nintendo from the NES to SNES. Why should it matter that Crash is the representation of the PS1 during the 5th generation given Crash's history with Nintendo afterwards with the GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and most importantly, the Nintendo Switch? Crash is not only historic and identifiable with Nintendo. But thanks to the N Sane Trilogy last year and Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled releasing this year, he's also RELEVANT. More relevant than pretty much half the roster.
