What would have happened if the psvitaTV had taken off and become more popular than the og portable Vita? Would that mean that it had always been a mistake to call the vita portable when clearly the pstv was a dedicated home console with the same guts as a vita. Does the existence of that different device mean the first devices form factor changed in any way? |
Good question... and unlike the luxury afforded to me, I will answer you directly as opposed to answering you with another question. As far as aI am concerned, the PSVTV was not a handheld. It was a home console. Why? because you could NEVER use it as a handheld. Simple as that.
Granted, things were never that cut and dry for the switch (until now) because unlike the PS vita, the Switch was not "just a handheld" It was a hybrid. A device that could do both and be used as both. But the Switch lite is not the same device... it cannot be used as both. So why should we still treat it as if it could? simply because it plays the same games? The damn name of the platform was based on something that the Lite can't o for crying out loud!!!
My issue with allthis is that I foresaw this very thing happening, which is why back then I insisted (and got stick for it) that the Switch should never have been grouped together with home consoles simply because it "can" be used as a home console. Using the switch as a home console is optional whereas a traditional home console simply doesn't have the choice, that the only way it can work. And now that the switch lite exists... we are now flat out comparing sales of a handheld to a home console. Something that we can only do if we somehow pretend that the switch lite s the exact same device as the OG Switch... which it most definitely isn't.
