What Mario games are more similar to 3D World?

I wonder how much is impacted by the way 3D World was played.  I played almost exclusively couch coop with the wife, and it was a blast.  Single player may not be a great, but for couch coop, 3D World is the best in gaming.

I've played couch coop with kids and solo by myself I just prefer the way all 5 characters control and feel 3d world. I honestly feel this game would be viewed differently if it was released as a new game on the switch instead of Wii U(just like tropical freeze was bashed as being unambitious on Wii u but now that its on the switch many consider it one of the best 2 platformers ever made)
