Why did Pokemon even jump to 3D?

All I know is arm chair impressions don't mean much. I thought Mario vs Rabbids was one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard of. Everything about it (on paper) seemed off. And shortly after it's announcement the web ripped it apart. Now that I have played it, I can honestly say it is my third favorite Switch game. And it reviewed quite nicely, oh and sold millions.
