Well, the entire series has become one of my personal favourites over the last five years or so, and much of that is thanks to the story and characters. The gameplay is a lot of fun too, with nice amount of tactical depth to them as the characters aren't just standing in line waiting to take a turn, but they can be moved around in the field and their attacks have different areas of effects and other elements like that which make the battles more interesting.

Sounds pretty cool. Is there an easy way to get caught up with the series, or is this one of those RPG series that you don't need to play every title to appreciate the latest title?

Each of the sub-series (Trails of Cold Steel, Trails in the Sky) are self-contained, but feature references to the events in the other ones. You don't need to play them all to understand what's happening as they all have mostly different characters and storylines. They just take place roughly around the same time period, but in different parts of the world. You can pretty much just pick one series to start with, but if you want to go chronologically trails in the Sky takes place a bit earlier than Trails of Cold Steel.
