I was slightly leaning towards the XB camp before the PS4 and XB1 were announced. Most of my friends were leaning towards PS. I went looking for reasonably accurate sales data and mostly non journalistic opinion's sometime after they launched, to follow along and see how things were playing out to help make up my mind. VGC won I guess you could say and I eventually joined shortly after E3 2016. What I can't remember is what exactly caused me to finally join, but it almost surely had to do with something linked to E3.

PS2 - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.
PS3 - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.
PS4 - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.
PRO -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.
PS5 - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.
PRO -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
