I had the same issues today as many others.
In today's special case, you had to unplugg the ethernet cable or throw the console out of your wifi to make it work offline.
Simply because the menu on the X1 wouldn't show up to go offline.
Updating was necessary for the launch Xbox Ones. I very much doubt that's still necessary for today. They will already have a newer OS version.
