As Portis says, it's about profits, and Nintendo are making way more money off Switch selling $60 software for a $300 system than they were selling $40 software for a $170 system with 3DS.

Ultimately, I think whether Switch can topple 3DS lifetime in Japan depends on how long Nintendo support it. The 3DS has been dragged out for a crazy long time by keeping it around as a dirt cheap entry level system, if Nintendo does the same for Switch in 2023 and beyond, the sky's the limit.
