There's really no reason to play SMK aside from nostalgia.  64 holds up a little better, but still isn't nearly as fun as 8.  They were more influential sure, but that doesn't mean better.

Yeah, I did play SMK to recount those days xD It's still rather charming. But yeah... I'd rather play MK8 nowadays.
