Oh god, is this going to be another 1-2 Switch and ARMS scenario where every-time its sales climb, the standards for success get arbitrarily changed because you don't like it?

No, it's a direct confrontation of your argument. Nintendo isn't "a lot of developers". They have so much more clout, money, and resources at hand. How many small-time electronic companies do you think would want their product to sell ~15 million units globally? Just because there are other companies that would like to have what the Wii U achieved doesn't mean that for Nintendo, who have higher expectations for their products, it wasn't a failure.

1-2 million in year one is still pretty good no matter how you look at it. Nintendo never really expected this thing to do monster numbers right away, rather they intend for it to sell at a steady pace for a long time. People are only calling it a failure relative to the numbers other Switch games. Same with 1-2 Switch and ARMS, which people also really tried to paint as failures because they didn't do 5 million copies in 4 months or something.
