They don't have anything to prove in terms of PS4 anymore, but pushing in the clutch is one thing, never shifting into another gear, even one or two lower, for miles, is another. I think they'll drop PS4 to $249 early 2019, maybe bundled, and then officially announce $199 just before, or sometime during the PS5 reveal.

As long as they reveal before the year is over. Even though Feb 2020 would only be a couple months away, if they waited to reveal until then, assuming a holiday launch, I think an entire year gap in between 2018 and 2019 without a flood of heavy hitting games would lead to a breakdown in brand loyalty and hype for some. It also leaves the door wide open for MS and Nin, and they would be fools not to try and take major advantage of it in whatever way they can. With an early 2020 launch, PS needs to make sure they announce the price with enough notice before xmas, so interested gamers can then leave the tree a little bare and march right into PS5 at launch.

I disagree.

First off, sny and nintendo are not or ever really going to be in direct competition. The only person sony has to worry about is MS.

Now with MS..... what is going to happen in the next 12 months? They anounce a slew of new games for the XB1 and steal sony customers? I don't think so.

This gen is won and dusted. And thats not saying sony wuldn't still talk about any new upcoming game or release nothing for the next 12 months. We at least know dreams and days gone are coming in 2019. They literally dont have to lift a finger till they are ready to announce the PS5. And they wont have to worry about MS, cause they cant do aything either. The only card MS has left to play is the very same one sony is going to be playing now. And thats talking up next gen.

If anything what this means, especially if sony is fixing to announce the PS5 at PSX next year, is that MS will take sonys E3 absence and use that as chance to announce XB2 before sony announces the PS5. And being that they are still both going to end up launching within 2 weeks of eachother gamers will still wait for the PS5 announcement.

You seem to think sony keeping quiet will hurt them. I think them keeping quiet but announcing early of an event at the end of the year will just build hype.

Even if Nin isn't directly competing with PS, allowing that available spotlight to go to waste.... would be a waste.

If MS is ready to launch late 2019, or knows PS is more likely going to be ready sooner, then announcing/revealing Scarlet seems given.

Days Gone, Dreams, and Death Stranding between spring and fall would be my guess.

I think in today's instant communication and gratification climate, gamers are going to go crazy unless PS drops a tonne of games or leaks a tonne of PS5 info all year long. Even worse the sooner MS announces Scarlet. If MS was ready for a late 2019 launch, and announced earlier in 2019, PS would probably face a similar social media storm like they did with Fortnite every day after that. Where's the PS5? Why haven't we heard more about PS5? When should we expect the PS5? Why haven't you launched the PS5? Did we mention the PS5?

This tends to lead to rumors, like Fortnite did, and those tend to go against your interests. That's why PS will most likely need a barrage of leaks and/or games to keep people busy, otherwise gamers might think PS is weak and lose faith.

The reveal in December 2019 and launch in March 2020m sounds reasonable.
Not a whole different from what Nintendo did.

The thing is, Nintendo could afford doing the reveal in October.
Wii U was pretty much dead, so, Christmas wasn't ruined for Nintendo.
But Sony has a hot product on their hands and revealing a console days or months before Christmas 2019 will really hurt them.

It's obvious that Sony will advertise the reveal as if there's no tomorrow and that will create a lot of buzz.
Should Sony really do the reveal (December 2019) so close to launch (March 2020)?

Between your first and second paragraph there's a gap… of the size of a year.
You are really ok with Sony being radio silent when others are active?

I get that Sony dominated this gen, but MS showed that they can rival Sony.

Don't take Sony winning next gen for granted. With a new gen anything can happen - and MS won't be stupid to commit the same mistakes.

A year of radio silence isn't a big deal if played right. Firstly sony is still releasing at least 2 games next year. So its not like they aren't doing anything at all.

I think something is clear here. They cannot come and talk about anything new outside what we already know because everything new is on PS5.

And with the right stealth marketing.... a leak here and there, declerations of a great PSX 2019. Sony will firmly still have mind share leading up to PSX 2019 and then all they have to do is announce the PS5 and talk it up a bit and show a couple of trailers. And thats all anyone will be talking about right along side whatever MS shows because I believe at e3 219 MS will show the XB2.

Unfortunately for MS, they require sony to make some realy big stupid mistakes for them to have another 360 effect. That remains to be seen.

If the PS5 is $500, then it doesn't matter when they announce. That's expensive enough that they won't have to worry that much about people changing their minds about buying a PS4. Most people who will be buying a PS4 holiday 2019, will be people who literally couldn't afford anything higher than a $199 price point, maybe even with a game or two bundled.

The one main way I see PS having any kind of a problem, is if MS launches Scarlet late 2019 for $400, with the PS5 being $500. That seems pretty unlikely though because I think for $500 PS is going to make sure you get your monies worth without question, and unless Scarlet is heavily subsidized, a $400 XB in 2019 won't be enough of a jump for the XB crowd. With XB1X still being relevant at that time, and being at least $100 cheaper, many will upgrade to XB1X instead, and some will stay on XB1X. This doesn't really hurt PS in terms of next gen, as long as Scarlet isn't gaining ground.
