Guys, I just finished The Shapeshifting Detective, and I must say I'm very impressed!
Earlier this year (Or last year, I can't remember) I played an FMV game called "The Bunker". It was good, however I felt like it was too short, and the gameplay was not very satisfiyng. The Shapeshifting Detective is an FMV game too, so I set my expectations low.
In this game you play as Sam, a detective that has the power to morph into other people. You are in a town called August, where a murder took place. 21-years old Dorota Shaw was killed and you must find out who did it. Chief Dupont will help you to keep track of your progress.
The game takes place most of time in a Guesthouse, where you can transform into other people by visiting your room. In this guesthouse there are three Tarot readers, that somehow predicted the murder, what makes them prime suspects. However, you will find more interesting people along the way.
The gameplay consists of traveling around the town and the guesthouse in order to interrogate the suspects. You can ask a lot of questions, but some of them can be skipped (Remember: Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut). When you finish the questions you can review what you discovered with Chief Dupont, or go to the next chapter.
When you are in your room, you can see a list of characters. You can transform into them and visit the suspects again, so they will reveal some secrets that they would not reveal to Sam. Yeah, the game is pretty much ask questions and pay attention to the answers. However, I can tell that the plot is really well made, and the story will get you hooked, if you like an detective story.
However, there's a downside in this game... Well, the plot is very good, but the ending feels a bit rushed. I mean, the investigation takes place slowly, and it should be that way. But, when you are about to crack the case, everything happens so fast that it looks like they were in a rush to finish the game.
Overall, The Shapeshifting Detective is far from perfect, but it's a great FMV game. By the way, the cast did a really good job with this one. Also, the ending leaves room to a sequel, so I hope to see more in the future.
Thanks for reading.
Oh, almost forgot: The game is available for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Playstation 4.
