A family restaurant we would stop at when possible while on the road for work, had their menus under the plexiglass. The first time I ever stopped there I went to grab twice, for two different sheets, and the crew (who knew) just howled. The waitress also got a good laugh when they pointed out they had tricked another one. I was pretty embarrassed for about a minute then brushed it off and had a good laugh myself. From then on I was always in on the joke for other newbies. Some immediately laughed it off, most would put their head down and roll their eyes but brush it off, and a few would take it like it was the worst thing that's ever happened to them.

There are plenty of optical illusions or things we just don't focus on enough until we need to, because it would be inefficient or mostly ineffective otherwise. No reason to feel like a dummy.
