Haven't played Shadow yet, and while I did like both the 2013 reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider a lot, it seems to me that while the gameplay is still fun, the story and Lara's character especially haven't really progressed all that much in these three games. The first game was supposed to be Lara's origin story about how she became the tomb raider, but then Rise was basically just chapter 2 of her origin story about how she became the tomb raider, and now Shadow, from what I've heard, is just another part of her origin story.

By this point we should have already moved past all that, and gotten to see Lara as a fully developed, confident adventurer. Instead she still feels like the same character she started as in the beginning, except more willing to murder people I suppose. Lack of meaningful character development was one of my biggest issues with the first two games, and the fact that Lara never really becomes a truly engaging protagonist. She's just kinda dull and overly serious. If this series continues after this, I really hope they inject some sense of fun or attitude to Lara. Give her character a little bit of edge instead of this bland "just kinda there" girl who very seriously and stoically states how she "has to do this" all the time.

Wow I never thought of it this way, but you are right. This explains why I am always hesitant to play 2013 and Shadow despite loving Rise

Yeah, it's the same reason why I'm in no rush to get to Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I liked the first two games, but by the end of the second Lara's story hadn't really moved anywhere, and it doesn't seem like that's going to change  with this one. I'll probably get around to it eventually, but it's not a game I'm aching to play right now.
