Of course they have an excuse.

You don’t need backwards compatibility if you have a fan base wiling to spend $100 on something like PS Classic.

How is that an excuse?

They released PS Classics on PSN for 5.99 to 9.99, which means with the 20 games alone they can make 120 to 200, without any need to produce more hardware and an install base or around 90M by December end.

Nostalgia, market presence and mass market appeal.

The SNES sold over 5 Million units in less than a year and further pushed Nintendo's brand power. Considering how popular the PS brand currently is, as well as the nostalgia wave they've been riding recently, It's reasonable to assume that the PS Classic will go on to match that, probably surpass it. At $99, €99 and £89 if you're guaranteed to sell 5+ Million, why would you bother releasing them on the PS store to potentially damage that push?
