Super Mario 64 was built around the N64 analog stick, Sunshine was set on Delphino island, shaped like a dolphin, because the gamecube's project name was Dolphin, Super Mario Galaxy's gameplay is build around the Wiimotes and Super Mario Odyssey is meant to be playable with the joycons and to be played in short sessions, to fit the hybrid form of the console. A 3D Mario game is the way Nintendo tell us how he wants us to play games on its console. |

You clearly missed my point but nevermind. And the fact that you can't name one 3D Mario game ported to an other home console proves also my point. It's never gonna happen, 3D Mario games aren'ts like other games. |
Super Mario 64 was ported to the DS. Seems that the N64 gamepad wasn't that essential to prevent a port to a newer popular Nintendo device.
Super Mario Galaxy was officially ported to the Nvidia Shield console. Seems that the Wiimotes weren't that essential to gameplay to prevent a port to the new Nintendo partner. Super Mario Galaxy 2 will probably follow.
The Switch is currently very popular and every Nintendo software seems to sell very well, no matter if they are new or older. The Joy-Cons are very flexible in their use with their 2 analog sticks and many buttons and motion detection and touch screen input via the main device... almost if Nintendo planned from the start to make the Switch ultimately port-friendly to all games of all their previous consoles. The Switch input possibilities include NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii (thanks to motion sensors) and WiiU games.
