Exactly. Nintendo was demolished with their last attempt at a dedicated home console, so they (correctly) decided to instead just throw a HDMI port on their portable and allow them to be plugged into a TV. Sony was demolished with their last attempt at a portable console, so they (correctly) decided to surrender that market to Nintendo and mobile phones/tablets.

Both Nintendo and Sony have shed themselves of their weaker hardware and have decided to focus entirely on their strengths. It's no surprise that both are doing extremely well relative to their recent past now that they both don't have Vita/Wii U successors weighing them down.
