I agree that they shouldn’t change her and hope they reverse this decision. But when the line “Why can’t they just add some minority background characters?” is uttered I’m lead to believe you’d prefer to see the minorities in the background. And I wasn’t aiming my response at you per sé. It’s just that whenever a character is shifted (especially to black) there’s some huge dust up about it. For instance, Starfire is black in the Titans film and people harassed the actress so much that she had to disable her social media. On the other hand, pretty boy blonde Aquaman has shifted to a scruffy, tattooed, and bearded Samoan and there’s nary a peep.

Look, I don’t want Jason Mamoa to receive backlash for being casted but that’s generally how it works. Black shifts are met with more angst/anger. But back to the topic. It’s dumb to change Ciri. And I hope they don’t because it’ll lead to the series losing fans for no reason which could lead to its failure. But from what I can tell you is that we’re very much used to seeing white casts in media and for the longest time we just watched and enjoyed it. Now they’re adding more minorities and some folks feel threatened by it.

Just to clarify, I posted the OP when I was pretty mad after first hearing about this news, so I might have been a bit too hasty with what I said. Also, I was specifically referring to the fact that there aren't alot of dark skinned characters within the Witcher lore, there is just 1 country with dark skinned people, Zerrikania, which is hundreds or possibly even over 1000 miles to the south-east of the countries where the Witcher books take place. So it doesn't really make sense within the lore for their to be any dark skinned characters within this show, except maybe 1 or 2 showing up as background characters. Would it really be that bad if the entire main cast was white in a fantasy show based on medieval Europe, which was 99% white? We have shows with all black or all asian casts and nobody bats an eyelash, but to have a show with an all white cast in 2018 is tantamount to heresy. I just don't understand it.

That being said, I'd personally be ok with them creating a new, original Zerrikanian main/recurring character for the show just so the cast wouldn't be all white, but I feel like changing the established race of main character is going way too far in the pursuit of diversity

Bolded = agree

And I let my anger get the best of me as well. My apologies if I came across as if I don’t understand. I posted a reply to another poster and I think the things I listed were in my head when I read the OP. And I do side with you when you say shows are allowed to have full minority casts and not be maligned like shows with full white casts. I think that bullsh!t when it occurs. Ciri being anything other than who we know her as isn’t right.

For the record, it’s like these studios are out of touch with blacks to be honest. If this show were full-on white I know I’d be excited as I am to watch it because I lobe The Witcher. Most blacks (not all) don’t care if something is all white. Epscially when the material suggests it should be. Like, we love Idris Elba, but if Heimdal were white we’d have still watch Thor. Sometimes I take it as a slap in the face to do this. Like we’re being thrown a bone because they want out cash. But on the other hand, the backlash that the internet throws out there can feel just as bad, most often worse.
