I think it's just a joke because they're exact replicas. Those are real diving suits, after all, and there have been approximately 5 billion NGE doujin produced.
I have no idea where this series is at relative to the manga. Either they're skipping a bunch of stuff or they're jumping around. Or maybe my memory is jumbled. There is a character that appears in the ED that I thought would have shown up before now.
