Or, it could be that someone that is integral to the Direct had family impacted, so is not able to participate right now.

Or, to take a more cynical view, it could be that Nintendo doesn't want to be overshadowed by this bigger news story.

Ok that makes sense. It's smart for Nintendo to avoid the negative PR that might come from the direct.
