Really? Japan has some of the worst earthquakes/Tsunami's on the planet. Japan's Earthquakes average over a 7 magnitude. They had a 9 magnitude quake in 2012 that killed 16,000 people. Impact is huge.

I didn't remember the 2012 being that awful, but, yeah. I know it's a dangerous place for earthquakes, I said I didn't expect one to have this much impact exactly because Japan is very well prepared for them.

I think, relatively speaking, that this earthquake is not a huge deal.  Most life in Japan, and elsewhere, is peoceeding as normal.  But, it is just big enough that Nintendo's PR department thinks it may be seen as disrespectful to announce non-urgent video game news today.  There's really no reason for them to risk a PR blunder, so they're going to delay until a more appropriate time.

Or, it could be that someone that is integral to the Direct had family impacted, so is not able to participate right now.

Or, to take a more cynical view, it could be that Nintendo doesn't want to be overshadowed by this bigger news story.
