On the bolded: No, we aren't.  No matter how much you may wish us to be otherwise, Alberta is still more progressive than most of the United States overall, and in particular, the American south.

On the rest: This isn't just Canada poking Saudi Arabia about the women of the middle east.  This is Canada standing up for a Canadian citizen who has been detained by Saudi Arabia for the crime of being a woman with an opinion.  You can be quite certain consular and government officials have been involved in this case doing far more than just sending tweets.

So if I decide to go for a hiking trip throughout SA and end up stranded in the desert, hanging on for dear life, Canada will have no problem bashing the SA Gov because they aloud this to happen?

You think when I'm asked why I went for a hiking trip alone in the desert in SA, and I respond with, 'because I am Canadian, which makes me special, so I figured I could just go anywhere and do anything and assumed everything would work out just fine', would be an acceptable excuse?

If this Canadian citizen went there protesting, then they obviously knew the details and what could happen, so they now need to deal with the consequences, just like I would for being such a moron. This would be like walking up to a black person and calling them the 'N' word to their face, and then completely blaming them for knocking out your teeth.
