I can think of two notable examples:
1) Dark Souls. I bought the game soon after release, played for around 10 hours and then just gave up. I just couldn't get into it no matter what, but then I decided to give it another chance a few years later, and ended up absolutely loving it. Now I consider it one of the best games ever made.
2) Resonance of Fate. A similar story with this one. Played for around 10 hours when it was release, but the punishing difficulty, complex battle system and the very slowly opening story eventually just drove me away. I came back a few years later and ended up finishing and really liking it. I think it's a seriously underrated JRPG from the previous generation.
