Even classic mario back as far as... I want to say SNES they've got eyes.

Pretty messed up, I had never imagined Mario actually ate them though, always figured he kinda just pocketed them and they were magic which made him grow or gave him extra lives.

Considering in Mario World you can actually pocket an extra one and keep it in your item slot for later... but... then if you have it there, it doesn't make you larger so I guess he has to consume it to grow.
