In my head this is how I'm imagining this..... Sony: See's trailer.."ok enough is enough, let's finally add cross play" ...everyone decides to continue to buy PS4 moreso over their competitors now that they approve cross play.... MS & Nintendo: "well that was stupid of us" (This is an exaggeration so no need to take it literally if you do) ----- Honestly I get that Sony should have cross play by now, or actually it really should've been last gen but MS didn't want to. Besides the point, but if MS/Nintendo having cross play, wouldn't that be better for them and give them the upper hand over Sony? Sure MS has Minecraft but it seems like Fortnite is becoming all the rage, with kids too, so over time that doesn't really help any of the big 3 significantly. I dont see this as just a jab at Sony but also it's their competitors are telling Sony to join in on a successful strategy. Just doesn't seem like a good business tactic on Nintendo/MS end. Maybe i'm missing the point but if someone would enlighten me as to why MS and Nintendo would want to make Sony's PS4 even better i'd like to know.

It's what you call friendly competition. Nintendo and Microsoft have to know by now there's no way they are beating Sony this generation sales wise so ''helping'' them is the least bit of their worries right now. They're doing something fans want and something fans want Sony to do. Too many people are thinking about ''oh they wont beat sony with this tactic!'' and those people are not getting the actual full picture of it and are thinking the wrong way about this.
Not everything is about sales and stats, sometimes a smart business decisions that cater to the consumer, regardless of sales is the smart way to go. People are not seemingly to grasp this enough
