I wouldn't bring my Switch with me anywhere. Just play it at home, so I probably wouldn't get a screen protector.
As for having to try hard to scratch it with the dock, I can't take your word for that. I've seen people claim the exact same thing, "that you'll have to try really hard to scratch it", only to then follow that up with "whoops, sorry. It actually can scratch it easily."

The way I understand it is that it's different from unit to unit. But if Nintendo release a revision, they should cover the plastic notches with something soft.

I've had a Switch since launch.  I take it everywhere and dock it everytime I'm home.  No scratches.  I've also never scratched the screen of any of my cell phones, but a friend of mine has completely cracked the screen on several of his.  You can't cover the world in nerf material just because certain people are prone to scratch/break things no matter what.
