Since day one you were able to sell the Switch dock for $50 or more: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=switch+dock&_sacat=0&Brand=Nintendo&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1
So if you wanted to save the $50 because you don't like/need the TV mode you just had to find someone who wanted an additional dock (multiple TVs in the house, only one Switch).
