| Illusion said: Probably never because Nintendo making the jump to open world games this gen has increased the development times significantly. BotW was great but it took like 5 years of heavy development and Mario Galaxy clearly took a lot longer to develop that Mario 3D World. The extra resources freed up by not focusing on the 3DS is going to be consumed very quickly by the greater degree of complexity that needs to go into Switch titles. That being said, if Nintendo keeps knocking it out of the park with the AAA titles that they do release, even though there is not a lot of them it will probably still be a worthwhile trade-off. |
Nintendo's not making every Switch game an Open World AAA epic. I mean, in the Switch's first year, we had 1-2 Switch, a tech-demo made on a shoestring budget, Snipperclips, an indie co-production made by 6 people also on a shoestring budget. Along with ARMS and Splatoon 2, which definitely aren't open world AAA games. BotW and Mario Odyssey definitely going to be among the exceptions rather than the rule.
I mean Nintendo can take their time with Open World AAA games so long as we get handheld style games, casual focused oddities, and niche experiments in between them.
