Why would they need a price cut if it keeps selling out in its current state? 

It's selling out because there's barely any supply. And the theory is that there's barely any supply because Sony is prepping for a price-cut, in Japan at least.  Or there's the theory that Sony just doesn't care about Japan and doesn't think it's worth the effort to keep a regular inventory flowing there.
