and the list goes on and on and on... these groups are generally atheistic and yet their core beliefs are pretty much religious and just as divorced from reality as the doctrines found in belief systems like christianity

It's all about telling someone what they want to hear and whatever that conveniently absolves them from their personal responsibility for their failures.
