Yeah, Nintendo basically ended serious support for the Wii after 2010, their 2011 lineup was a late/delayed Zelda title and a few other stragglers. Wii essentially got 4 years of proper support, and 1 year of leftovers.
I still think Nintendo will iterate on the Switch rather than use the old generational structure. People are used to itsrative hardware these days with iOS updating yearly, and Android based platforms often multiple times a year. The Switch hardware is easy to iterate on; and it’s not a gigantic deal using asset tiers; devs have already been doing this quite successfully with Switch porting. It would be interesting to see this sort of approach with Switch units having 6-8 years of support and new hardware every 2 or 3 years, rather than waiting 4-7 years for an entirely new console. As long as Nintendo only adds to the interface, and never subtracts, it’s all good; and with Switch, that doesn’t seem like an issue.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
