I love posts like this. Very detailed and well put.

For me Smash is much more of a single player game than I assume it is for most people. I don't know anyone who plays Smash(a.k.a. i'm a loser hermit), and the online is just fucking bad. That's why I've been thinking a lot about the different ways they can make singleplayer more fun. A good start would obviously be implementing a better online system, with some extra bells and whistles, but that's too obvious ...

I think they need to make a new Subspace Emissary. Brawl had an amazing campaign that made me really enthralled in the world of Smash Brothers. I know people didn't like Brawl, but seeing as how it was one of my first video games, I really felt like I was playing a game where every character was connected in some special way. It helped that the opening to the game really sets the mood, but Subspace Emissary just finalized the feeling of different worlds colliding. As a kid, I didn't know who any of  these characters were and I had to look up where the characters were from in-game. So I just thought of it as "WOW, that's the cool guy with the cape from Kirby!" or "wow that's the blue haired kid from Fire Emblem!"

Smash 5 would already have a better story mode than other fighting games just based on the fanservice of having dozens of characters in one singleplayer mode. But it would help even more if the lore of Smash was expanded on, or if they made a really interesting main villain that you can unlock after you finish the campaign (sorry, don't know if this is already a feature in Brawl ... I never finished it's campaign unfortunately). Smash-specific characters would be cool, besides just Master Hand. Or if that's a stupid idea, scrap that and just make one of the villains from one of the core Smash franchises the main villain. It could even be like an alliance of villains ... though that's probably my least favorite option, sounds too comic book-y.

Another thing that I think could be implemented is an Arcade Ladder mode that takes a page or two from other modern fighting games. I didn't dip into Classic Mode or All-Star mode until Smash 4, and I honestly found both really boring and forgettable ... in fact, I had to look them up a few days ago just to be reminded of what they were specifically. I know that they're .... kind of ... like Arcade modes in other fighting games? I mean, you do fight NPCs and the challenge does get more difficult in classic mode. But an actual Arcade mode would be great! It doesn't even have to have cutscenes in-between battles, just add one big one at the end(although obviously, the more the merrier). An arcade mode could allow for cutscenes that are quirky and funny and aren't connected to one big story like Subspace.
