There may be only a few tens of thousands of people who go to actual tournaments and stuff like that, but the 'semi-competitive' scene (people who train their Pokémons for online battles, but who aren't on the official ranking) is definitely huge.
I highly doubt that a lot of Pokémon fans would want the battle system to change dramastically. And with 'fans' I don't mean these few thousands of people, but the millions of people who are into the franchise.
