Through March 2001 (13 months of availability) the PS2 had shipped 10.61m units, so a sell-through extrapolation for twelve months isn't going to be anywhere close to 3m, but rather in the ballpark of about thrice that number. For a good chunk of that first year the PS2 was Japan-only, so 8-9m in its first year is an impressive number.

I misread when I looked it up. I think the number I found may have been referring to only one territory. The point stands that PS2's first year was trampled by Wii's first year, just not by ten million.
