This kid that did the shooting,they've been interviewing students and they said they KNEW this was going to happen because he was bullied. While I, like most people, support improving our systems for helping people who have a mental illness, there is little in the way of evidence that addressing the mental health issues in America will play a strong part in reducing the overall rate of violence and gun violence in this country. In fact, blaming incidents like this on mental illness can actually do increased harm, by further stigmatizing mental illness and driving people away from seeking out help. Also, as a solution, it typically stays in the nebulous "do something" region which allows people to sound well-meaning for a few days until the people move on, effectively scapegoating the problem onto mental illness while accomplishing virtually nothing.
