I mean, as long as Nintendo made enough profit off of it to justify the development of it rather than the opportunity cost of what they could have made with those developers, then it served it's purpose. I don't for one moment think Nintendo plans on keeping any of their apps around or updated more than a year (at least for most). They probably expect them to be successful in the short term, and then move on to the next app game/software. The one exception being Pokemon Go more than likely.
