I had the exact opposite experience as you. I had tried to play the game for decades but always got bored or lost interest. Then I went on Ebay and actually bought the real cartridge, popped it into my SNES and played on a CRT, wiring the sound through a stereo and become totally engrossed, playing it daily until I beat it.

To me, it's the easily my second favorite 2D Zelda ever. I think it deserves the praise it gets because it berthed most of the songs, concepts and gameplay that OOT would use a few years later.

Oh yes, the experience playing the game on an emulator or with the real console on a CRT makes a big difference, even without nostalgia effect. The sound chip on the SNES is legendary. No emulator comes close. Zelda III still has the best soundtrack in the series in my opinion.

True! And the thing that really blew me away was just how much of of the soundtrack was used in OOT. I played OOT when it launched back in the day and never knew that a lot of those tunes were used in ALTTP. When I was playing it for the first time, I was like "Omg, that's from OOT" over and over again. It really served to strengthen my appreciation for its place in history and its creative imprint.
