I played the first Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy on NES and I found Dragon Warrior the more "grindy" of the two.

Final Fantasy is BY FAR the more grindy of the two, even with the fire exploit in the north of the pirate town. There's more grinding in Final Fantasy 1 before the first fiend then there is in all of Dragon Warrior. Granted, the first Dragon Warrior is an overall shorter game, but it's not particularly grindy for games of its time, especially when compared to Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star.
