But both Bravely games are in the same game universe while Octopath Traveler isn't, plus the latter's writing is an improvement. The developers are making another JRPG, sure, but there's no perceivable connection between the old games and the new one.

I see it very similarily to "The Lost Sphear". It's not in the same universe as "I Am Setsuna", but it's done by the same team, in the same style, with a lot of similarities. While it's not titled as a sequel, it's most definitely a successor.
