No joke I finished Xenoblade 1 four times in the year it came out. I will say going back to it now the battle system would be a bit clunky compared to what I'm used to now. X and 2 really refined the formula and in 2 it's at it's best. Inventory you can have 99 of each item. It's insane. XCX is a great game for exploring but the story is incomplete and not related to XC1 outside of references. I love X so much because of flying mechs in a massive open world. The real downside to Xenoblade games is they are bad at explaining how they work. They are complex and have depth and yes at first seem very overwhelming. Over time you learn it as they do have a learning curve but while they throw a lot at you, a good amount of it is just optional and lets you play how you want to. It's just giving you more options. When you boil it down it's no more complicated than any RPG in basic structure.

You seem rather experienced in the game with four playthroughs, so I'll ask you, but anyone can answer this;

What are the best skill trees for each character? I currently only have Shulk and Reyn in my party, but not sure which path to set them down... are there builds and skills that are better than others, or will I be able to get by with just doing down the default paths? (Integrity for Shulk and Spirit for Reyn)

Edit: Also which Arts should I be leveling up? o.O

Depends on your playstyle really. It's one of those things where they give you loads of options but you choose what's best for you. For me I just attack a crap ton and had Reyn as my tank and Sharla as my healer. As the game goes on you will have quite a few people to choose to use in your party. (you get more thna you can use at once like any of the games) so early on I wouldn't worry too much as you will have plenty of party members to diverse your skills. For now just go with what you want.
