I don't think they ever thought they could, or wanted to. Everybody actually was already expecting a permanent price drop to combat the 1X's launch...I even think they will announce one at PSX in 2 weeks!
That's the beauty of cheaper hardware that already has been out for a year. The new 7100 model is more silent, less power hungry and cheaper to produce, so they can easily drop the price now.
