I mean, I thought about that and you are right but its the only path forward even if the chance is really Slim (no pun intended). What I am noticing is that PSVR is selling really well and the reason for that is that you don't need a Pro to use it. In other words, there is still a lot of value in the standard PS4. This doesn't translate to the Xbox One S. Its almost like in order to sell the Xbox One X, they had to destroy the image of the S. Its been $199 longer than the PS4... so what happened here? |
You’re right, they essentially heavily devalued the X1S a year ago at release already, by making the X1X that much more powerful. It makes the S look like a really bad deal which was the reason PS4 kept outselling it by basically 3:1 for the whole year. Now that the One X is released games on X1 look really bad in comparison. The gap between PS4 and Pro is small enough to not embarrass the base system buyers, both early and new customers. Sony was wise by going that route imho.
That way they keep the PS4 slim interesting while still creating a possible market for people, who might later on still upgrade to a PS4Pro, be it for VR or 4K down the line. I fully expect Sony to focus their marketing and price drops on the Pro, next year around Black Friday.

I don’t think UHD Blu-Rays are a big factor outside of film aficionados. They are just too expensive, not very commonly available and a lot of the content is only upscaled 1080p content anyway at the moment.
