The thing is 3rd parties caused the outliers in the first place. When Wii was announced everyone banked on the PS3 to kill the competition. At the time it was understandable considering the success of PS2. By the time the big franchises come out, many Nintendo fans bought the other systems, me included. At that point it become pointless buying those games on a Nintendo system as they either come out late or not at all. We are at the point were they need to build the audience again. Some will go back to Nintendo only and some will remain multiconsole gamers like me. However the kids who turn to teens will stick with Nintendo as the games are there for them to play. If the games are not their for them they will move on to the other systems. |
Oh... I disagree. I feel like the core audience started to fade with N64 as much of the audience went to PS1. Although N64 was a great platform for console shooters which eventually became more popular on PS2 and OG Xbox, while Gamecube continued to lose the core audience but had good support because it was easy to support. The 6th gen was the last time Nintendo had comparable specs to the competition.
3rd parties didn't just support PS3, they thrived on the combined audience of PS3 and 360... or as I call it the PS360. The PS360 had a larger audience than Wii and sold more software. PS360 also thrived on core IPs versus Wii's amazing success with the casual audience. The Kinect and Move exist because they wanted some of that casual money.
If Nintendo isn't gonna push specs, I don't know how they can appeal to the core audience in a big way. Switch doesn't get many significant core games and it struggles to handle a game like Doom. There is certainly an audience for Switch and it seems to be big, but its not gonna steal the core audience from X1 and PS4.
I think we agree Switch is a great device to own along with another platform. That's why I have a Wii U, for experiences I don't get from other platforms. But I don't see how any avid gamer is content with just a Switch. But maybe that's okay, as long as people want a Switch it doesn't matter if they own another platform as well.
