Well... things have definitely changed. Both Sony and Microsoft have left the usual course of console generations. In the past, companies made add-ons at times in order to advertise a power advantage, but Sony and Microsoft launched more powerful versions of their existing consoles and mandate improved graphics to developers.

But considering the timing of the Xbox One X - launching long after the generation had already been decided - it's clearly more of a footnote than a proper comparison for the generation as a whole.

I personally consider PS4, Xbox ONE and Wii U as 8th Gen, and PS4 Pro, Xbox ONE X and Switch as Gen 8.5

There where such interludes before. In between 4th and 5th gen with Philips CDi, 3DO, Amiga CD32, and you could also count Sega's X32 and NECs SuperGraphX to this. The Atari 5200 could be seen as Gen 2.5 considering how quickly it got replaced by the 7800, too. Upgrades within a generation are not new, just very seldom used.
