In hindsight, a virtual tie still seems pretty likely, or perhaps a Nintendo win by 1-2 million. What surprises me the most though is the 3DS. How Nintendo managed to ship 1.9 million of the 3DS in this quarter baffles me. Do that many people still want the 3DS?

The New 2DS XL launched, hence the high numbers for the quarter, but no adjustment to the fiscal year forecast. At 2.86m the 3DS is already almost halfway at 6m, but it's clear that the Q2 performance was inflated, so Nintendo isn't bullish.

As for why people still want the 3DS, Nintendo's mindshare has been on the rise in the past year and the 3DS sits in a very affordable price range for hardware and software. The Nintendo Selects series (equivalent to Platinum on PlayStation) sells for $/€20 a piece and combined with the evergreen nature of various Nintendo IPs, the 3DS is a really solid option to get into Nintendo or back into Nintendo again. The New 2DS XL also combines the lack of the loathed 3D with a clamshell design and bigger screens, so it opens up a segment of the market that previously refused to buy the system.

Don't forget DQ XI. The 3DS sold over 140k just in Japan the week it released.
