That extension seems to implement the dark mode by itself and not just enable a 'hidden' dark mode that already exists in YouTube. Of course this detail is irrelevant for the end result, but it seems you can't really say YouTube's old design has a dark mode.

I could've mixed it up with one that indeed enabled a beta for the dark mode - I've found extensions that do that when googling for one.
