I don't think the old design has a dark mode.That extension seems to implement the dark mode by itself and not just enable a 'hidden' dark mode that already exists in YouTube. Of course this detail is irrelevant for the end result, but it seems you can't really say YouTube's old design has a dark mode.

Ah, I should have been more specific. I'm using YouTube on desktop, it's just that the desktop version of the website hasn't updated for me yet. I tried the new one and didn't like it (it was really bad in certain ways), but the old design doesn't have a dark mode. I know the new one does - I tried it myself.
